Improvement Movement

Improvement Movement at Neurolux Lounge

What happens when a quartet of songwriters starts writing from the instruments instead? Improvement Movement took that question into Your Perfect Real Life, building the record around the interplay the Atlanta group had found on tour. At Neurolux in Boise, you can give that interplay your attention. The prog-rock bill also includes Adron, whose writing gives you a different reason to arrive for the opener.

Listen to Still Cold before you go. The song starts the record with a breakup on its mind, and it gives you a way into an album that makes room for humor and unease. At the show, try following one player for longer than you normally would. A part that seems small on its own can change how the whole band feels once you hear what the others do around it.

Adron's guitar playing draws on Brazilian music, and her recordings can make room for whistling and birdlike sounds. That gives you another set of details to notice before the quartet takes over. If a friend usually hears something completely different in the same record, ask them to come along. With two distinct acts on the bill, you have a whole evening to compare where your attention went and which sound you want to hear again.
