LUCY (Cooper B. Handy)

LUCY (Cooper B. Handy) at Neurolux Lounge

How much can you bend a sound before it turns into something you want to hear again? LUCY, the project of Cooper B. Handy, makes that a good question to take to Neurolux in Boise. His recordings put clipped and distorted textures next to words that can turn from tender to absurd in a line. Blanket Ghost opens the live show, which is listed for ages 21 and over.

Start with the words if the production is the part that usually catches you first. Handy can make a line feel like a direct confession and then twist it just enough to make you laugh. Then switch your attention back to the texture around it. That combination rewards a full set of listening, especially if the first song you heard left you wondering what the rest of his work sounded like.

The bill also gives you a chance to discover Blanket Ghost on the same outing. Bring the friend who sends you songs you have to play twice before you know what to make of them. Come early enough to hear the opener and leave some room afterward to talk about what surprised you. You don't need to agree about which moment worked best to have a good reason to look up both artists afterward.
