Margaret Glaspy

Margaret Glaspy at Basement At Shrine Social Club

Margaret Glaspy brings I Am Both to listeners who like songwriting with room for contradictions. The album's title track grew from a character Glaspy admires for seeing clearly while holding more than one side of herself. That is a good place to start before her Boise show in the Shrine Social Club basement.

Joe Henry produced the album. At the concert, listen for how Glaspy makes a line feel personal. Olive Klug opens. Arrive for both artists if you want to compare how different writers get you to listen, and take someone who usually has a favorite lyric to share on the way out.

If you're drawn to writers who can make a character feel like someone you recognize, give this set the kind of attention you'd give a story. Notice where a line complicates the first impression you had of the song. In a concert, you can follow that change as it happens and see what the singer does with a moment of hesitation or resolve. You can also go in knowing very little. Start with the title track if you want a foothold, then let the rest of the evening give you whatever you came to hear from a songwriter in person.
