The Shark Is Broken

The Shark Is Broken at Boise Little Theater

Robert Shaw’s larger-than-life presence gets turned inside out in The Shark Is Broken, and that choice makes the whole evening click. At Boise Little Theater in Boise, Idaho on January 15, the play turns the troubled filming of Jaws into a sharp backstage comedy, with Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider portrayed as characters caught in the same uneasy hold while a mechanical shark keeps failing them. Film fans will recognize the setting, but the real pull is the human friction, where patience thins and ego, wit, and frustration keep colliding.

The production leans into the comedy of waiting, which gives the story its momentum. Weather delays and technical trouble leave three performers stuck in a situation that should be professional but never feels simple, and that tension becomes the point. Instead of replaying the movie everyone knows, the play looks at the awkward, funny, and unpredictable space around it, making the movie set feel immediate and alive onstage.

That perspective gives audiences something different from a standard tribute or a straight historical retelling. Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon shape the material into a play that is as much about personalities under pressure as it is about the famous film they are making, and director Curtis Ransom guides that mix of humor and strain with a clear theatrical focus.
