The Shark Is Broken

The Shark Is Broken at Boise Little Theater

A movie about a shark becomes a stage comedy about everything going wrong, and that clash is exactly the fun. The Shark Is Broken turns the troubled filming of Jaws into a live theatrical story, where a failing mechanical shark and weather delays leave Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider caught in a tense, funny limbo. It is a play, not a screening, and that makes the pressure feel immediate in the room.

At Boise Little Theater in Boise, Idaho, this production lands on January 17 under director Curtis Ransom. Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon built the script around the awkward waiting, the professional friction, and the absurdity of trying to keep a film afloat when the centerpiece will not cooperate. For film fans, that behind-the-scenes angle gives the story extra bite.

What makes the evening worth the trip is how the humor comes from three performers trapped in the same situation, each one trying to outlast the delay in a different way. The play keeps its focus tight, so the comedy and tension can build from the characters themselves rather than from spectacle. That restraint is part of the appeal.

If you like stories that reveal the messy human side of a famous production, this one has plenty to offer. It is smart, specific, and built for anyone who enjoys watching pressure turn into comedy onstage.
