The Shark Is Broken

The Shark Is Broken at Boise Little Theater

A troubled movie set turns into something wonderfully immediate when it hits the stage. The Shark Is Broken takes the famously difficult making of Jaws and turns it into a live comedy about three actors waiting around, coping with delays, and trying to keep the day moving when the mechanical shark and the weather will not cooperate. Onstage at Boise Little Theater in Boise, Idaho, the tension becomes part of the fun, and the story feels both familiar and freshly alive.

What makes this production especially appealing is the way it lets film fans look at a classic from a new angle. Instead of showing the movie itself, it focuses on Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider as characters caught inside the grind of making it. That behind-the-scenes pressure gives the play its comic rhythm, with every stalled moment becoming another chance for frustration, ego and timing to collide.

There is also a special connection in the writing, since Ian Shaw, son of Robert Shaw, co-wrote the play with Joseph Nixon. That gives the material an added sense of perspective, while director Curtis Ransom guides the story through its mix of humor and unease. The result is a staged comedy that keeps the spotlight on performance, not nostalgia, and invites audiences to enjoy the human side of a legendary production.
