A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol at Danny Peterson Theatre at the Morrison Center

The chains rattle before you see them. That's how a proper ghost story works, and Charles Dickens knew it when he sent those specters to haunt Ebenezer Scrooge through one supernatural night. Gordon Reinhart's stage adaptation receives its premiere run at Boise State University, leaning into the tension between Victorian ghost tale and redemptive holiday classic. Both exist in full force. Make it a live performance outing in Boise.

Watch Scrooge face the consequences of every cold dismissal, every cruel choice, every moment he chose wealth over humanity. The spirits don't ask permission, they confront him through ghostly visits that force a reckoning with the man he's become and the bleak future awaiting if he refuses to change. It's unsettling. It's supposed to be.

The Danny Peterson Theatre at the Morrison Center gives this story the intimate space it demands. You'll feel the chill when the first ghost arrives. You'll recognize yourself in Scrooge's desperate bargaining. And when redemption finally breaks through on Christmas morning, you'll understand why this tale has endured for generations, not despite its darkness, but because of it. The ghosts give Scrooge an uncomfortable chance to listen to people he usually dismisses. Watch what he does with that chance.
