A Little Princess

A Little Princess at Boise Little Theater

When Sara Crewe leaves India for a London boarding school, she carries something no headmistress can confiscate: a belief that kindness matters more than status. This November 27 staging of A Little Princess at Boise Little Theater gives families a rare gift, a story that doesn't simplify childhood struggle or bore adults with shallow cheerfulness. John Vreeke's adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's beloved novel creates accessible comedy-drama that bridges generations, letting an eight-year-old and a forty-year-old find different reasons to stay engaged.

The moment news arrives about her father, Sara loses her privileged position and discovers what dignity looks like when you're hungry and invisible. Under Nikki Wesselman's direction, these themes emerge through imagination and genuine emotion, no talking down to young audiences. Burnett understood that imagination isn't escapism; it's survival equipment. Sara's inner life becomes her resistance against cruelty, a concept that resonates differently depending on which side of childhood you're sitting on. The 7:30pm performance creates space for meaningful conversation about character, compassion and how we define richness.

Come for a story that treats both adults and children as people worth challenging. You may leave wanting to talk over hot chocolate about what you each noticed, what made you uncomfortable, or which moment hit hardest.
