Foy Vance

Foy Vance at Knitting Factory Concert House - Boise

Nearly three decades of writing went into Foy Vance's eighth studio album, IF. That is a good starting point for the world tour stop at Knitting Factory in Boise. Listen to the record before you go and see which line stays with you. Producer Anderson East helped shape the album, and IF: WE gives you a way into Vance's writing about family, community and belonging.

Take the person you send songs to when a lyric reminds you of home. You can compare the lines that landed for each of you on the record, then listen for what draws you in when the songwriter is in front of you. A concert built around a songwriter you care about can make for a better catch-up than trying to talk over music somewhere else.

There is another reason to make the trip even if IF is new to you. Try following the sound of Vance's voice before you decide what a song means. The way a line is delivered can make a plain word feel personal, and you have time in a concert to notice what a recording on in the background might let slip by. A songwriter with years of material behind him gives a newcomer several ways to get interested. Start with the work about home and belonging, then see which part of his writing earns a place in your own listening.
