Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox

Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox at Knitting Factory Concert House - Boise

How long would it take you to recognize a song if someone changed its musical era? Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox brings the Future Is Vintage World Tour to Knitting Factory in Boise. The concert production takes contemporary songs and recasts them in older popular styles, including swing and jazz.

The fun is hearing which part of the song survives the change. You might spot a melody before you place the lyric, or recognize the words and then notice how differently they land against a new rhythm. The production features performers from the Postmodern Jukebox video channel. Bring someone who knows a different corner of pop music and see who spots the familiar songwriting first.

There's also a pleasure in giving the players your attention after you've figured out the song. Notice what happens when the rhythm shifts or the singer holds a familiar line longer than you expect. Once you're past the little jolt of recognition, the arrangement has a chance to stand on its own. That's what makes the show a good pick for somebody who loves pop and somebody who listens mostly to older styles. You have two ways into the same performance, and neither of you has to know the whole repertoire to play along.
