Boise State University Symphonic Winds

Boise State University Symphonic Winds at Morrison Center For The Performing Arts

One concert gives you two chances to listen to what a wind ensemble can do. At the Morrison Center in Boise, the Boise State Symphonic Winds under Myron Peterson share the program with the Mountain View High School Concert Band under Joshua Barro. It is a chance to hear university and high school musicians in the same hall.

Pick a section to follow. A woodwind line can change the color of an ensemble, brass can bring a melody forward, and percussion can change how you feel its pace. Then try the same thing with the other band. If someone in your family plays an instrument or is thinking about starting, this is a way to hear what listening and playing together can do.

A wind concert can be a good first outing for someone who knows the instruments by sight but hasn't had much chance to hear how they work together. Follow a melody for a while, then listen below it for the part that keeps the ensemble moving. That gives you something to notice even if you don't know the name of the piece. It also makes the visit personal for a student or family member who has spent time rehearsing with a band. You can share the experience of hearing what all those individual practice sessions can add up to.
