Karina Rykman at Ballroom At Shrine Social Club

What happens when the bass gets to lead the conversation? Karina Rykman gives you a good reason to find out at the Shrine Social Club ballroom in Boise. Her bass playing sits at the center of a group with guitarist Adam November and drummer Chris Corsico. If you usually follow the lead guitar first, give the low end your attention and see where it takes you.

A trio makes it easy to pick a player and hear how much the others contribute. Follow Corsico for a while and notice how the rhythm holds things together. Then shift to the guitar and see how your sense of the same passage changes. That is the kind of listening that can make the difference between knowing a musician's sound and getting absorbed in what the group does with it.

Rykman has played Bonnaroo and Peach Music Festival. A Boise date on her own bill gives you the chance to settle in and give her music more attention than you might between festival sets. Take the friend who is always asking what you noticed about the band. You might leave talking about different players entirely, which is one of the pleasures of hearing three musicians who each give you a reason to listen.
