Clarion

Clarion at Treefort Music Hall

The layers are a good place to start with Clarion. The East Los Angeles trio came up in the DIY scene and blended shoegaze, post-punk and Japanese rock on its self-titled debut EP. If Hello Juliet found you through a fan video, catch the group at Treefort Music Hall in Boise and see where your attention goes when you can watch the players as well as listen.

Novulent and Slow Exit are also on the bill. Give yourself time for the openers and use the concert to find out what you respond to across all three acts. Bring someone who is always up for a new band and see which one you each want to look up afterward.

Try following the rhythm underneath the layers. With music that gives you several things to listen to at once, where you put your attention changes the show you hear. One person might follow a melody through the sound while the person beside them catches a shift in pace first. The debut EP and Blue Fairy are places to get your bearings ahead of time, especially if you've only heard one track. At the show, let the rest of the bill take you somewhere you weren't already planning to go.
