The Brothers Comatose

The Brothers Comatose at Treefort Music Hall

Put on Golden Grass and listen to what happens when the harmonies and the strings each have something to say. The Brothers Comatose bring that West Coast roots music sensibility to Treefort Music Hall in Boise. Their blend of string-band playing and rock energy gives you something to follow even if you and your concert companion come from different listening habits.

The record was their first with Addie Levy, and its fiddle, banjo and mandolin are good starting points for getting to know the band. Miller Campbell opens the concert. Arrive for both acts and see what catches your ear when you have time to hear each approach unfold.

The way into this show can be as simple as following the rhythm. If you're used to hearing a rock band drive a song, listen for how a string band creates its own push. Then switch to the harmonies and see how they change the way you hear the same arrangement. There's plenty to notice even if you couldn't pick a mandolin out of a lineup. It also makes a good concert to suggest when your group can't agree between a folk show and something with more movement. You can give both sides of the band's sound a fair hearing.
